Semantic Data Management

Today, data in companys are very heterogeneous and distributed across all different business units and locations. Finding, accessing and understanding these data sources is a major challenge for data scientists, as they have to deal with different protocols, data formats and even company-specific organizational issues such as firewalls and data protection policies.

To manage the increasing number of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data sources, semantic data management is an important focus of our current research. The goal of semantic data management is to bring structure and comprehensibility to the heterogeneous data landscape of companies, cities and research institutions. The targeted use of semantic technologies, such as knowledge graphs, ontologies and semantic models, enables the management of data sources at the information level, thus ensuring the availability, accessibility and comprehensibility of this data.

In addition to the development of scalable semantic data platforms and holistic solutions for industry, our research focuses on the development of semantic data lakes. In this context, our research focuses on the semi-automated construction of knowledge graphs for the management of heterogeneous data sources. On the one hand we investigate how methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence can improve data integration and increase the degree of automation. On the other hand, we investigate in this context how the accessibility to these systems for employees of a company as well as their usage can be simplified and the degree of required expert knowledge can be reduced.
